Girard Perregaux Gyromatic

The Gyromatic was the marketing term for an automatic movement used by GP. It was employed for many years and seen in date and non-date movements. The jewel count changed over time, with 39 jewel appearing on the dial in 1957 and the full marketing of the Gyromatic jewelled rotor. The dial count was often changed to allow lesser jewel movements to be imported into the USA with reduced taxes.

Movements

  • GP 47 is a full-rotor automatic movement based on an ETA ebauche (ETA 1256); a 11 1/12 ligne movement with 18.000 A/h.
  • GP 47 and GP 71 are inscribed on the rotor and come with the typical nomenclature for GP movements in the 1950s (like "47 BF 123" or "71 AE 456"). 71 is seen in square-cased models only.
  • GP 21/22 are inscribed on the automatic bridge, but no longer on the rotor. And the calibre is indicated by the first 4 digits of the number
  • GP 31/32 are inscribed on the plate which holds the rotor.
The Gyromatic evolved into the HF, a high beat version circa 1968. Standard beat rose from 18k to 36k. This movement is now highly collectible, competing with the Longines Ultrachron at the time for the smoothest second hand.
