An incredibly rare over sized Big Pilot watch with a rotating bezel dating to 1936. Only 2 known to exist. What makes this watch particularly unusual is it's large 40 mm diameter case, which at the time resided only in very few pilot watches, the Longines Lindbergh watches being another exception.

this example sold at Christies Auction House in 2010.

Listed as the following:

Eterna. A large and attractive stainless steel military wristwatch with black dial
Signed Eterna, movement no. 2'701'281, case no. 2'433'595, manufactured in 1936
Cal. 12 520 nickel finished lever movement, 15 jewels, black dial, luminous Arabic numerals, luminous hands, engine-turned subsidiary seconds, enlarged inner revolving bezel with luminous Arabic numerals, large circular case, snap on back, case, dial and movement signed
40 mm. diam.

Both watches have been acknowledged by Eterna's Archivist to reside in their ledgers. Movement image is from the other known example, which dates that watch to 1938, with a Movement serial of 273****

in 1993 Eterna brought out their Les Historiques range of watches. The 'Airforce 1' clearly representing as a copy of the original 1936 watch. Though in this case featuring a secondary crown for rotating the bezel. This may indicate that they where working off an archive image of only the front view.
An incredibly rare over sized Big Pilot watch with a rotating bezel dating to 1936. Only 2 known to exist. What makes this watch particularly unusual is it's massive 40 mm diameter case.

An example sold at Christies Auction House in 2010.

This may indicate that they where working off an archive image which may not have shown how the bezel assembly actually rotated, or a disregard for authenticity.

An incredibly rare over sized Big Pilot watch with a rotating bezel dating to 1936. Only 2 known to exist. What makes this watch particularly unusual is it's massive 40 mm diameter case.

An example sold at Christies Auction House in 2010.

Though in this case features a secondary crown for rotating the bezel. This may indicate that they where working off an archive image which may not have shown how the bezel assembly actually rotated.
As in all things, not all watches are created equal. During the 1930's several of the prestige brands choose to produce very expensive watches, they were often unusually big for the time, made of stainless Steel, and of superb quality, with fine detail, often having attributes including anti magnetic cases, chronometer grade movements, and like the cheaper nickel plated brass models, rotating bezels. Without exception they are exceedingly rare, and now very sought after.
Movado was one of the top watch and travel clock manufacturers in the 20th century until well into the 70's. Producing high quality mechanical single dial and chronograph wristwatches. Among the many companies in part doomed by poor decisions, and ill conceived projects, they finally became a casualty of the quartz revolution, with only a spin off, based on the 'museum' model wristwatch being continued in America, through a separate company trading off the Movado name. Until then they had had a history of producing fine pilot watches, both civilian and issued.
The Movado Ref 12717, is one of the rarest of the Movado steel pilot watches, indeed of all pilot watches, and is believed to have been produced between 1936 and 1938. It is unique in that it is the only Steel pilot watch that shares almost identical physical attributes to the famed IWC MK IX, having a 37,5mm steel case, with inner steel dust cover, and an identical fluted steel rotating bezel (interchangeable with the MK IX), with a large 7mm diameter flat onion crown. Several dial versions are also known to exist, including both a cream and black version with a sector type dial. Currently less than 10 examples have been observed. Due to the lack of a Movado archive, it has been impossible to determine which watch originated first. Pictures show the Movado alongside the IWC for external comparison. Second Movado Pilot watch, with a case back engraving, which looks to have a reference to Junkers, the Aircraft manufacturing company.
Movado was one of the top brands in the 20th century until the early 70's producing high quality mechanical single dial and chronograph wristwatches. Among the many companies in part doomed by mismanagement, and ill conceived projects, they finally became a casualty of the quartz revolution, with only a spin off, the 'museum' model wristwatch being continued in America, through a separate company trading off the Movado name. A very special Longines Aviator pilot watch reference Ci 3795 with internal numeric rotating bezel. Approximately 34 mm diameter without crown. Date of manufacture circa 1938. Longines Caliber 12.68Z. Very few exist. The rarest version is a West End 'Bijou' Longines Ci 3795. Distinguished by the West End dial and West end 'star' hallmarked Longines 12.68z. West End at that time were the agents for Longines in India. This watch also has the distinction of having a British military issue stamping on the inside of the case back, also referenced within the ledgers at [[Longines]] Switzerland.
